A Mentor:
- Is a Paralegal, Attorney, Legal Professional or 2nd-year student with 18 credits and Legal Research completed
- Is committed to the mentorship relationship for two consecutive semesters
- Understands the relationship is voluntary and no monetary compensation is available
- Observes confidentiality strictly
- Understands there are no guaranteed results
- Gives advice but expects the Mentee to make their own decisions
- Asks questions to determine the issue
- Assists in creating strategies and objectives for success in class
- Assists Mentee in finding way to potentially overcome any personal barriers he/she may have
- Will not act as an advocate on behalf of Mentee to the professor or administration
- Focuses on needs of Mentee
- Is respectful and courteous – timeliness and communicates cancellations
- Is honest and open
- Is confident
- Is easy to approach
- Is flexible
- Is encouraging and positive
- Is patient and understanding
- Sees the mentee as an equal

- Provides your Mentor with feedback
- Discusses academic or personal issues which are causing barriers to success
- Understands that Mentor will not act as an advocate on behalf of Mentee to professors or administration
- Learns about campus resources, programs and networks to eliminate factors that may prevent success
