From Your Colleagues: Using Zoom for Student Feedback

Wes Jorde, philosophy faculty at DCTC, has been using Zoom to provide feedback to students on written assignments in his online courses. This form of feedback allows students to hear his voice, an important factor in reducing student stress levels as they receive the feedback. It also allows them to review the verbal feedback, written annotations, and transcripts as many times as they like.

We are excited to be offering these opportunities for faculty to share effective teaching methods across disciplines. Each session will featured a guest facilitator, who will open the topic and provide a broad perspective on the topic. Faculty will then facilitate the discussion toward a deeper understanding of how the topics play out in the classroom.

Our hope is that these informal discussions result in a deeper understanding of our diverse student body. See the events calendar for more information, including location as well as guest and faculty facilitators for each session.

Academic Technology Innovation Funds Available

In collaboration with Todd Jagerson and ITS, the Teaching and Technology Committee at IHCC and Faculty Development Committee at DCTC are pleased to announce new funding to support faculty innovation in the use of technology in teaching and learning contexts.

Both committees have set processes for requesting these funds, with a focus on ease of faculty access, accountability for their use (for teaching and learning), and obtaining information required to make purchases.

Guidelines

Please send requests for funding to ttc@inverhills.edu (IHCC) martin.springborg@dctc.edu (DCTC). Requests should include a brief introduction as well as the following:

  1. Basic information about the technology being requested, including manufacturer, cost, and subscription information or quote if applicable.
  2. A connection to at least one learning outcome from your course(s) that will benefit from the technology being requested.
  3. Some information about where you found the technology (through a colleague, at a conference, etc.).

DCTC Only:

  1. Note any matching funds for the request, from a department or program.

Teaching and Learning in the Diverse Classroom

Online

February 17 – March 23

 Cornell University’s Center for Teaching Innovation is offering a massive open online course (MOOC) for educators, Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom, which guides instructors in exploring frameworks and strategies for building and sustaining inclusive learning environments. The course runs from February 17 – March 23, 2020 on edX.org.

U.S.-based and higher-education-centered, the five-week course is for anyone with teaching responsibilities, at any level of diversity expertise. Registration for the course is open now.

The course features:

  • compelling voices and stories from students and faculty
  • opportunities to reflect on social identity, both your own and students’
  • an introduction to key research on inclusion and student-centered learning
  • an emphasis on assessing your own course design through the lens of inclusion
  • a learning community guide to help form a cohort at your institution.

The course is free to attend, or there is an option to earn a certificate (for a $49 fee).

This training covered basic and advance tools, as well as recent updates made to email and other functions. Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Short Course

QM’s flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and its use in reviewing the design of online and blended courses is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors. It is particularly helpful to those new to QM or those considering the adoption of a quality assurance process for online and blended learning.

In addition to learning about the QM Rubric and the course review process, participants will learn to apply the concept of alignment and draft helpful recommendations for course improvement.

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the foundational concepts of Quality Matters.
  2. Identify the critical elements of the QM quality assurance program, including the QM Rubric, materials, processes, and administrative components.
  3. Apply the QM Rubric to review online courses.
  4. Make decisions on whether the demo course meets selected QM Rubric Standards.
  5. Apply the concept of alignment.
  6. Draft helpful recommendations for course improvement by citing annotations from the QM Rubric and evidence from the course.

Skills to Facilitate Your Course Efficiently using D2L Brightspace Tools

The Quality Improvement Process site provides examples of ways to to support student-to-content interaction in courses.

  • Fixing courseware glitches, such as broken links, typos, and mistakes, as needed.
  • Monitoring learning outcomes based on student interaction with content.
  • Improving content as needed to facilitate learner outcomes.

By the end of this three week course you will be able to using D2L Brightspace tools to mange your D2L course efficiently and effectively. You will be provided with key workflows that you need to copy or import course materials, tips and tricks to streamline the process, and strategies for organizing your course schedule. Participants come away with the skills to reuse existing materials in the most efficient manner.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate between D2L Brightspace tools (e.g. Import/Export/Copy Components, Manage Dates, Brightspace Pulse) to apply effective course structure for student motivation.
  • Apply D2L Brightspace tools to organize a structured path for students to take within your course.
  • Select and implement one of the D2L Brightspace tools in your course.

STAR Symposium 2020

This free virtual one-day conference includes presentations that focus on pedagogical approaches including delivery via face-to-face, blended, flipped and online classrooms.

The STAR Symposium focuses on topics related to quality initiatives and best practices (teaching, design, faculty support, etc.) for face-to-face, blended, and online courses and/or programs.

The symposium includes 24 concurrent sessions and two keynote presenters. Join us to hear from experienced professionals about topics related to faculty support, course design and delivery, assessment practices, technology integration, and student engagement strategies.

Open Educational Resources (OER) Learning Circles provide faculty, from across the system and from any discipline, the opportunity to collaborate with others committed to redesigning courses, or authoring ancillary materials to help eliminate textbook costs for students.

In addition to virtual weekly meetings, OER Learning Circles will utilize a D2L Brightspace course to support faculty and will take place over a ten-week period. The equivalent of .5 RCE is available to participating faculty.

There are two (2) steps to apply for OER Learning Circles:

  1. Complete the letter of support.
  2. Apply online.

From Your Colleagues: Three Examples for Student Engagement and Retention

During an IHCC AD Day session on retention strategies, LeAnne Schmidt, Amanda Barklind, and I showcased the efforts of three faculty: Mary Petrie, Scott Sandok, and Shane Stroup. Mary incorporates principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into the design of her online courses. Scott also does this, and during the session shared other ways he engages students online. Shane live streams his on-campus class sessions so students who need to attend remotely can do so interactively – instead of passively. This practice also allows him to bring other perspectives into his classes.

Community of Practice: Transparent Design in Teaching

As part of AD Days at IHCC, Mary-Ann Winkelmes, author of “Transparent Design in Higher Education Teaching and Leadership”, facilitated a workshop on applying transparent design do instructional materials. This workshop featured a panel of faculty from both IHCC and DCTC who participated in a community of practice on this topic all of fall semester. These faculty graciously shared edits they had made to assignments and will use in their courses this semester.

We will be continuing these communities at both colleges this semester. If you are interested in participating, just send an email to mspringborg@ihcc.edu or martin.springborg@dctc.edu by Friday, January 24. I’ll then send out a scheduling poll to determine three meeting times throughout the semester. Are you wondering whether your online course is accessible to all students? D2L has a tool you can use to check your content for any accessibility limitations. Watch this four-minute introduction to this tool and see just how easy it is to run this test.

Zoom Web Conferencing

Minnesota State began transitioning its web conferencing vendor from Adobe Connect to Zoom last August. While Adobe Connect will remain available until May 15, 2020, I invite you to start using Zoom now or in the near future. You (and all Minnesota State faculty, staff, and students) can access the Zoom web conferencing tool by navigating to https://minnstate.zoom.us and choosing Sign In using your StarID.

Zoom provides the same features you’ll find with other major video and web conferencing services and more, such as:

Brightspace Refresher Camp

This half-day workshop is designed for all faculty. Whether you have been teaching online for several semesters or are new to it this year, this hands-on workshop will be of benefit to you. Facilitators will focus on beginning tools and recent updates made to D2L Brightspace.

Transparent instruction shows great promise for increasing the confidence, sense of belonging, persistence and success of first-generation, low-income and ethnically underrepresented students. In this workshop we’ll review the findings as well as educational research behind the concept of transparent teaching/learning. Then we’ll apply that research to the design of your own class activities and assignments. Participants will leave with a draft assignment or activity for one of their courses, and a concise set of strategies for designing transparent assignments and class activities that promote students’ learning equitably.

Brightspace Refresher Camp January 8

This half-day workshop is designed for all faculty. Whether you have been teaching online for several semesters or are new to it this year, this hands-on workshop will be of benefit to you. Facilitators will focus on beginning tools and recent updates made to D2L Brightspace.

Join us in room 2-141C at DCTC from 12:00-4:00 on Wednesday, January 8! Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate will be provided. Bring your own candy canes.

Manage Exemptions in Brightspace

We’ve made a new tool available in our instance of D2L Brightspace that allows faculty to excuse students from activities and have it be visually noticeable to a student. This document explains how to use the Manage Exemptions feature to exempt a student(s) from having to complete activities within your courses.

You can exempt students from items within the following:

  • Assignments
  • Checklists
  • Discussion Topics
  • External Learning Tools
  • Quizzes
  • Self-Assessments
  • Surveys
  • Grade Items

Learning activities that have a Grade Item associated with them (such as Assignments, Discussion Topics, and Quizzes) will also automatically exempt the student from the associated Grade Item when they are exempted from the activity.

To succeed, innovative efforts to broaden participation in STEM and to make equity an immutable factor in quality STEM teaching require critical reflection and active engagement from the entire range of stakeholders. This webinar will bring together key institutional leaders, funding agency officers, and professional society representatives for an open and frank discussion of the structural and systemic barriers to quality and equity in undergraduate STEM education. Participants will focus on challenges faced, struggles overcome, lessons learned, and potential threats.

WeTeach: Online/Blended Design and Delivery

WeTeach is an interactive, collaborative course intended for instructors who teach online or blended courses. Instructors will become an online student in the course to develop their own online teaching and design skills. This course also allows instructors to share online teaching experiences and best practices. This course is for instructors who are new to online teaching. It is also for instructors looking to expand their skills, explore new ways to engage students, and use technology more effectively to save time. Quality Matters standards, technology tools, D2L training, best practices, and research will be woven throughout all modules.

COST: $400.00

The next WeTeach offering starts February 3, 2020 – April 2, 2020 (Week of March 9th off for Spring Break) The weekly virtual meetings will be offered:

  • Mondays at 12: 00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. CST
  • Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. CST

Participants are expected to attend ONE of the 1-hour virtual meetings each week.

Broken Media Conference, Exhibition, and Workshop

Winona State University

June 26-28, 2020

Interested in digital media and experimental art? There are several ways to participate in the “Broken Media” Conference, Exhibition, and Workshop:

  • Attend the conference and exhibition (June 26-28). Sponsored by the International Digital Media Arts Association (iDMAa), the conference will attract an eclectic mix of artists, scholars, and professionals from around the globe to talk about emerging media in a friendly and down-to-earth setting.
  • Present your work (June 26-28). Feel free to submit a paper for our peer-reviewed conference program or send a proposal to have your work included in the juried exhibition.
  • Enroll in the game design workshop (June 22-26). In this year’s workshop, taught by Stephanie Boluk and Patrick LeMieux (authors of Metagaming), participants will hack video games interfaces to explore new ways of playing. No prior programming experience needed. Undergraduate, graduate, continuing education and non-credit options are available.
  • Bring (or send) a group of students to participate in the workshop or conference. This year’s conference features special sessions focused on student interests, special pricing options, and on-campus housing to make the conference accessible to student artists and media-makers.

The cost for the conference is $200 for first time attendees, $150 for previous iDMAa attendees, and $50 for students. Housing will be available for $25/night.

We will also demonstrate how to access and use custom HTML templates within Brightspace to give your courses a unified visual theme. We’ll end the workshop by helping you use basic HTML code to create further visual enhancements. These foundational skills can be used in posting announcements, creating content and web documents, and so much more. Take your course design skills to the next level by using basic web coding!

Manage Exemptions in Brightspace

We’ve made a new tool available in our instance of D2L Brightspace that allows faculty to excuse students from activities and have it be visually noticeable to a student. Formative and Summative Assessment

There are many ways we assess student progress, and some of the most helpful ways are often the least utilized. In addition to more traditional summative forms of assessment, such as exams and high-stakes research papers, you and your students may benefit from more frequent, low-stakes assignments – either in addition to, or in place of some of those more traditional methods.

Myths about Accessibility of Online Courses

​Improving the accessibility of online learning is a passion that runs deep at D2L. That’s also true for the many organizations that use Brightspace to provide learning opportunities to students and employees. There is a great deal of good advice out there related to improving the web accessibility of online courses, but there are many misconceptions too. We’ll examine some of these myths and provide some different perspectives for you to consider.

We’re sorry if you couldn’t join us for this webinar last week. We don’t have input on the scheduling of D2L-provided sessions, so sometimes host these opportunities at times that conflict with faculty meetings.
